Van Deventer, Levine Compete on Day Three

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Bulldogs ended their stint at the NCAA East Regional on Saturday with senior John Van Deventer competing in his last collegiate race in the 1,500-meter run and sophomore Mike Levine competing in the discus. Without anyone advancing to nationals, the team concluded their outdoor season with a total of four regional performances.

Van Deventer clocked in a time of 3:52.92 in the 1,500-meter run to finish 19th overall. Taking an early lead, Van Deventer stayed on pace with the frontrunners for the majority of the race, only to lose position in the last lap as the field fought for qualifying spots. It was Van Deventer's second race in two days, as runners had to first advance to finals through a preliminary race on Thursday. Villanova senior Matthew Gibney took the top qualifying spot in 3:46.29.

Van Deventer leaves behind not only the second-fastest outdoor time in the 1,500-meter run in Yale's history but a season that showed perseverance and dedication after overcoming three years of injury, medaling in the 1,500-meter run at outdoor Heptagonals with a third-place finish and pulling a regional-qualifying performance in what Van Deventer knew was his last chance. While his outdoor season has finally closed, Van Deventer will travel back to his home country of England this summer to compete in the Yale-Harvard/Oxford-Cambridge meet.

In the discus, Levine had his farthest throw in his last attempt with a mark of 51.14m, but did not advance to finals. Kentucky senior Colin Boevers took the top qualifying spot with a throw of 57.49m. Levine, in his second year qualifying for the regional meet, ends his season with a Heptagonals title in the discus and a third-place finish at IC4As and should continue to be at the top of the league in the throws next year.

The Bulldogs have officially ended their outdoor season, but those who earned a spot at the Harvard-Yale meet earlier this season will travel to England from June 15-29 for the biannual Yale-Harvard/Oxford-Cambridge meet.
