Captain Named to All-Ivy League Second Team
ITHACA, N.Y. – Thanks to his second-place effort in the 400-meter dash (48.95) at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships this weekend, senior track and field captain Matthew Bieszard was granted a spot on the All-Ivy League second team. Though Bieszard was an All-Ivy athlete in the 2010 outdoor season as a member of the 4x100-meter relay team, this marks the first time he has attained the honor individually.
Bieszard, a political science major from Midland Park, N.J., has been a key contributor to the Yale track program for four years. As a rookie, he made waves by setting the all-time indoor freshman record in the 400-meter dash at Heps (49.24), and has since then been a mainstay on the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relay teams. He currently holds the third-fastest indoor 200-meter time in Yale history (21.81) and the seventh-fastest 400-meter time (48.40). As captain, he has led the team all year, and been instrumental in mentoring a young corps of sprinters.
The indoor season continues next week for Bieszard at the IC4A Championships, where he will race against the top athletes in the East. He has qualified individually in both the 200-meter and 400-meter dashes, and as a member of the 4x400-meter relay team.
First team All-Ivy selections are awarded to the winners of events at Heps, and the second team is composed of the runner-ups.
