Van Deventer Successful in NCAA Regionals Qualification Bid

PRINCETON, N.J. – Yale freshman John McGowan was the lone Eli to compete n the final day of the Intercollegiate Association of Amateur Athletes of America (IC4A) Championships, and he made the most of his opportunity. McGowan qualified for the finals of the 1500-meter run by running the 11th-fastest time in prelims yesterday (3:49.77). Sunday's race was significantly slower, but McGowan managed to hold the same postion with a time of 3:57.33.

McGowan has shown tremendous promise this season, emerging as one of Yale's premier middle distance runners. His PR of 3:49.37 is third-best on the team, and he has repeatedly risen to the level of his competition. At IC4As, he was the only freshman in the field to make the final in the 1500-meter run, and one of only two underclassmen.

The Bulldogs finished 34th at the IC4A meet with seven total points.

Elsewhere, senior John Van Deventer ran an outstanding race in the 1500-meter run at UVA. Van Deventer, who saw his season dramatically shortened due to injuries and did not qualify for IC4As, registered for the Virginia Challenge in order to compete against some of the best competition in the country in a last-gasp attempt at qualifying for the NCAA East Regional. The race came last night, and Van Deventer exceeded all expectations by running a phenomenal time of 3:45.01, well beneath the NCAA qualification standard of 3:47.81. Van Deventer placed fourth in his heat and 15th overall. Binghamton's Erik van Ingen won the race with the fastest time in the nation this year (3:38.06).

In all, 4 Elis have qualified for NCAA Regionals. Senior Matthew Bieszard, junior Mike Levine, senior Nathan Richards and Van Deventer will travel to Jacksonville, Fla. in two weeks for a chance to make it to the national meet in Des Moines, Iowa.
