Bieszard, Van Deventer Named All-Academic as Individuals; Team also Honored

NEW ORLEANS – The Yale men's track and field team has been named a USTFCCA All-Academic Team for 2012, and two Bulldog seniors -- Matthew Bieszard and John Van Deventer -- were honored with All-Academic selection individually.

As a team, Yale posted a 3.39 GPA, just .1 behind the top team in the country (Stanford, 3.49). The Bulldogs had the best GPA in the Ivy League, and the league had seven of its eight teams earn All-Academic Team honors (tied for the most in the country with the Big East). Nationally, a total of 85 teams earned the award.

Bieszard, Yale's track and field captain, earned individual second team All-Ivy League honors both indoors and outdoors in the 400-meter dash. He was an NCAA East Regional qualifier in that event, and earned a pair of team awards -- the Lee Calhoun Award, presented to an outstanding sprinter or hurdler, and the James Stack '61 Award for leadership. A member of Davenport College, he majored in political science.

Van Deventer capped his Yale career by qualifying for the NCAA East Regional in the 1,500-meter run for the second year in a row. This is his second straight year earning USTFCCCA All-Academic honors. Also a member of Davenport, he majored in history.

To qualify for the USTFCCCA All-Academic Track and Field Team, the student-athlete must have compiled a cumulative grade point average of 3.25 and have met either of the following athletic standards: for the indoor season, a student-athlete must have finished the regular season ranked in the national top 96 in an individual event or ranked in the national top 48 (collective listing) in a relay event on the official NCAA POP list provided by TFRRS.org; for the outdoor season, a student-athlete must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Championships (including preliminary rounds).
