Walden Races to Top-Five Time at IC4As

March 8, 2009

BOSTON - Sunday, the Bulldogs wrapped up their indoor season at the IC4A Championships, held at Boston University. The men finished 35th with a total of seven points, thanks to the point contributions of senior Jake Gallagher, sophomore Max Walden, and the 4x400-meter relay. Walden had a break-out race in the 5,000-meter run, running one of the top-five fastest indoor times in Yale history.

"Max ran a perfect race," men's distance coach Dan Ireland said.

After staying with the front pack for the entire race, Walden made a move into first place at the bell lap, winning his heat in 14:23.02. Only five runners from the faster heat managed to beat Walden's time, giving him sixth-place overall in a field of 32 athletes. This time was a personal-best time by over 20 seconds in the event, and the fifth-best indoor performance ever for the Bulldogs. This is especially impressive considering Walden only met the qualifying for this event (14:47) last weekend at the Heptagonal Championships, running a personal-best time of 14:44.

"I knew [Max] was always capable of this, he just hadn't had the right conditions for this kind of performance up until this point," Ireland commented.

The Bulldogs earned another sixth-place finish at the end of the meet, cruising to a time of 3:14.52 in the 4x400-meter relay. The team consisted of sophomore Marty Evans, freshman Matthew Bieszard, junior Remi Ray, and junior David Soiles. This impressive performance ranks No. 7 All-Time indoors for Yale, a nice follow-up to Saturday's season-best No. 4 time.

Rounding out the final score for the Bulldogs was senior Jake Gallagher, who earned one point for his eighth-place finish in the mile run, running a time of 4:11.07. Fellow senior Jared Bell finished just out of scoring position in ninth place, running 4:17.60.

Despite bringing only a partial squad of athletes to IC4As, the team was pleased with their overall performance.

"It was a great way to end the indoor season" Ireland concluded.

While this brings the 2009 indoor season to a close for the Bulldogs, they will be back in action for the outdoor season in two weeks. At the end of their annual spring training trip to California, the Bulldogs will compete at the UCI Invitational in Irvine from Mar. 20-21.
