June 8, 2005

Sacramento, CA - With a school-record time of 8:36.39 in the prelims Wednesday night, Lucas Meyer advanced to the finals of the steeplechase at the NCAA Track and Field Championships. Meyer's time placed him seventh in his heat, won by Florida State's Andrew Lemoncello (8:34.28). The top five in each of the two heats advance along with the next four best times, and Meyer was one of those four (12th overall). He will now compete in the finals Friday night at 9:50 p.m. Eastern time.

Meyer's mark broke the record of 8:40.13 set by Jim Gibson in 1988. Meyer had nearly broken the mark at NCAA Regionals May 28 with a time of 8:41.37.
