NEW HAVEN, Conn. - This Friday and Saturday, May 29-30, a select group of Bulldogs will compete at the NCAA East Regional Championships. The meet will be held in Greensboro, N.C. on Irwin Belk Track at North Carolina A&T. Five Yale men, spanning events including the throws, jumps, and middle-distance, met the tough performance standards in order to qualify for the meet. The competition will feature the best college track and field athletes on the east coast, from New England down to Florida.
Both the team and individual competition should be stacked this weekend. The Florida State Seminoles have captured the win at the past three consecutive NCAA Championships, and are ranked No. 4 in the most recent USTFCCCA national rankings. However, the Florida Gators have dominated the rankings lately, and currently reside in the top position with a significant lead over No. 2 Texas A&M.
The East Regional is one of four NCAA Regional Championships held this weekend, which will help determine the field for the NCAA National Championships to be held June 10-13 in Fayetteville, Ark. The top five finishers in each event will automatically qualify for Nationals, while a number of at-large bids to nationals will be awarded to top-12 finishers based on previous performances, and will be announced the week following Regionals.
Five senior men will be representing the Bulldogs in Greensboro: Jared Bell (1,500-meter run), Samuel Fox (high jump), Murat Kayali (1,500-meter run), Jeffrey Lachman (discus throw) and Nathan Noll (discus throw).
Lachman is the top-ranked member of the Bulldog team, coming into this meet as No. 3 in the region for the discus throw. He is also ranked 11th in the nation with his mark of 58.29 meters from the Yale-Harvard dual meet on April 18th.
The first event for the Bulldogs on Friday will be the 1,500-meter run, in which Bell and Kayali will be competing.
1,500-meter run - 4:55 p.m. (Jared Bell, Murat Kayali)
High jump - 5 p.m. (Samuel Fox)
Discus throw - 5 p.m. (Jeffrey Lachman, Nathan Noll)
1,500-meter run finals* - 5:30 p.m. (Bell, Kayali)
*Must advance from Friday's preliminary heat to participate
