• Jeff Perrella Named Academic All-District

    Jeff Perrella, who finished his Yale career this past fall after advancing all the way to the NCAA Cross Country Championship, has been named first team Capital One Academic All-District 1 in men's track & field/cross country. He was one of 11 first-team selections in the university division of District 1, which includes seven U.S. states in the Northeast plus five Canadian provinces.

    The Bulldogs earned 2010 Division I All-Academic Status from the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, announced on Thursday. They are the only team in the country to have earned the award for the 17th consecutive year.

    Senior Jeff Perrella earned Division I All-Academic Cross Country status by the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA), announced last Monday. A total of 56 runners from 42 schools received All-Academic honors for the 2010 cross country season.

    Junior Nathan Richards was elected by his teammates as captain for next year at the Bulldogs’ annual cross country banquet on Tuesday. Senior Jeff Perrella also received the Mike Stanley-John Cleary Class of 1954 Men's Cross Country Award for the second year in a row.
  • 10 Bulldogs Earn Fall Academic All-Ivy Honors

    Ten Yale student-athletes have earned Fall Academic All-Ivy honors. Football players Patrick Witt and Jesse Reising, Jeff Perrella from the cross country team, soccer player Eric Meyer and lightweight rower William Zeng were honored on the men’s side. The women selected were soccer players Kate Macauley and Miyuki Hino, field hockey player Dinah Landshut, volleyball player Taylor Cramm and rower Stephanie Madner.
  • David Shoehalter Begins Role as Yale’s Mark T. Young ‘68 Director of Cross Country and Track and Field

    With the start of the track and field season this coming Saturday, David Shoehalter officially takes over the Bulldogs’ program as the Mark T. Young ’68 Director of Cross Country and Track and Field. Shoehalter, who has helped build the program in his 16 seasons as a coach at Yale, succeeds legendary Yale coach Mark Young ’68 in the director’s position. In addition to Shoehalter’s promotion, the Bulldogs also promoted assistant coach Marc Davis to head coach of the men’s track and field team.

    Senior Jeff Perrella finished out his collegiate career by competing at the NCAA National Championships, hosted by Indiana State University, on Monday. Perrella’s performance was a huge feat for Yale as only the fifth Bulldog to qualify for the national meet since 1991.

    Senior Jeff Perrella will run his final race in Yale uniform at the NCAA National Championships next Monday in Terre Haute, Ind. Perrella placed eighth at the NCAA Northeast Regional last Saturday to notch an automatic qualifying spot for the national meet, which will feature more than 31 teams and 255 runners.

    Senior Jeff Perrella became the first Bulldog in six years to qualify for the NCAA National Championships at the regional meet on Saturday. Yale co-hosted the meet with Fairfield on a new course at Hammonassett State Park with more than 38 teams competing. The Bulldogs finished eleventh overall with 304 points.

More than 38 teams will vie for a spot to compete at the NCAA National Championships on Nov. 22. The Bulldogs, who have been ranked in the top 10 all season in the regional polls, will also get a chance to end the season on a strong note.

The conference meet, which features all eight Ivy League schools, is the highlight of the cross country season for many runners. After an off meet at Penn State National, the Bulldogs look ready to bounce back with two weeks of solid training going into this weekend.

    The Bulldogs brought a young team to the nationally acclaimed New England Championships on Saturday and ran a strong race, despite junior David Demres twisting his ankle during the race. The Bulldogs took 16th out of 47 teams at one of the largest collegiate cross country meets in the country with more than 300 runners competing.

    The Bulldogs will participate at the second-oldest meet in the country at the New England Championships on Saturday. More than 52 teams from the region will compete at Franklin Park in Boston in the 124th year of the event, including fellow conference teams Brown and Dartmouth. While most of the Bulldogs will not compete this weekend to prepare for Penn State Nationals on Oct. 16, head coach Dan Ireland still expects the team to place in the top 10.

    Even though the Bulldogs did not have enough runners to field a team at the Quinnipiac Invitational on Saturday, they put on excellent individual performances in their first competition of the season, with senior Chris Scavone winning the 8K race in 26:23. (The rest of the team opened at the Dartmouth Invitational last weekend.) Head coach Dan Ireland said he was pleased with all four runners who competed at Quinnipiac.

    After a strong opening performance at the Dartmouth Invitational last weekend, the Bulldogs will have the rest of their squad race for the first time this season at the Quinnipiac Invitational on Saturday. Although the Bulldogs will only run four individuals and will not be eligible to score as a team, head coach Dan Ireland said the meet will allow those runners to get a race in before the Harvard-Yale dual meet at home on Sept. 24.

  • Mark Young ‘68 to Retire After Cross Country Season

    Mark Young ’68, Yale’s Mark T. Young ’68 Director of Cross Country and Track and Field, announced on Friday that he will retire from that position at the conclusion of the upcoming cross country season. Young, who is entering his 31st season as a coach at Yale, will remain with the program coaching the women’s track and field team’s distance and middle distance runners through the spring. Associate head coach David Shoehalter will be Yale’s new Mark T. Young ’68 Director of Cross Country and Track and Field.
