Advanced to NCAA Championship in Cross Country Last Fall

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Jeff Perrella, who finished his Yale career this past fall after advancing all the way to the NCAA Cross Country Championship, has been named first team Capital One Academic All-District 1 in men's track & field/cross country. He was one of 11 first-team selections in the university division of District 1, which includes seven U.S. states in the Northeast plus five Canadian provinces.

Perrella enjoyed a memorable cross country season last fall, becoming the first Yale runner to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championship since 2004. He earned All-Region honors after finishing eighth (30:04.2) at the NCAA Northeast Cross Country Regional, hosted by Yale. He also earned second team All-Ivy League honors for his finish at the Ivy League Heptagonal Championships, where he placed ninth with a PR of 24:44 on the 8K course.

The fall of 2010 capped an impressive career for Perrella, who transferred to Yale from William & Mary in 2007. In 2009-10 he won Yale's Mike Stanley-John Cleary Class of 1954 Men's Cross Country Award for dedication to the team. He was elected 2009-10 Yale track and field captain by his teammates, and ran in the Olympic Development Men's 5,000 at Penn Relays in 2010.

Perrella majored in economics. In addition to this academic honor, he was also a two-time Academic All-Ivy League selection and was USTFCCCA All-Academic. Off the track, he was a coordinator with Yale's Student Taskforce for Environmental Partnership.

A native of Westfield, N.J., Perrella attended Westfield High. He was in Saybrook College at Yale.

Voting for the Academic All-District teams was done by members of CoSIDA (College Sports Information Directors of America). Nominees for the award must be key contributors to their varsity team while also maintaining a grade-point average of at least 3.30. There are eight districts throughout the country, and first team Academic All-District selections are eligible to be selected as Academic All-Americans. That award is announced on June 21.
