NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Junior Tadhg O'Callaghan (Cork, Ireland) has been named captain of the Yale men's cross country team for 2007. O'Callaghan was selected by a team vote and announced at the annual team banquet Monday night. Senior Brian Gertzen (Linwood, N.J.) won the John P. Cleary, Michael C. Stanley Class of 1954 award, which is given for performance, commitment and dedication.
O'Callaghan had Yale's fourth-best finish at the NCAA Northeast Regional Nov. 11, helping the Bulldogs to an eighth-place finish in the 41-team field. He also helped Yale to a third-place finish at the IC4A Championship Nov. 18.
As a sophomore O'Callaghan was on his way to having a break-out year before a stress fracture in his foot brought his season to an end after just two races.
O'Callaghan was a member of the Irish Junior National Cross Country team that competed in the European Championships in 2004.
Gertzen had Yale's second-best finish at the both the NCAA Northeast Regional (38th overall, 33:01.8) and the IC4A Championship (17th overall, 25:39.8). That was the second year in a row Gertzen was the Elis' No. 2 finisher at NCAA Regionals.
