Vasquez Earns Second Ivy League Rookie of the Week Honor
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – On the heels of
leading the Yale women’s basketball team with 13.5 points and
8.5 rebounds per game this past weekend, freshman Megan Vasquez has
been selected as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week, as announced by
the league office today. Vasquez, Yale’s leader with 11.3
points per game through 16 contests in 2009-10, takes home the
weekly laurel for the second time in her freshman campaign.
Vasquez nearly posted a double-double in each of the Bulldogs’ two games this past week. She started the week with a pair of career bests, recording 19 points and eight rebounds in a 69-62 non-conference road loss at Bryant on Monday afternoon. In Yale’s return to Ivy League play against Brown on Friday, the freshman guard notched eight points, all in the second half, and topped Monday’s rebounding effort with a career-high nine boards as the Bulldogs ran past the visiting Bears, 67-43.
Thus far in 2009-10, Vasquez has made five starts in 16 games and averages 26.0 minutes of action per contest. In addition to her team-best scoring output, which ranks her third among Ivy League freshmen and 11th in the Ancient Eight overall, she ranks sixth in the league in free throw percentage (.750, 45-60) and 20th in rebounding (4.4 rpg). Vasquez has scored in double figures 11 times this season, including a string of nine straight games from Dec. 9 to Jan. 18.
Vasquez and the Bulldogs will be back in action this weekend as Ivy League play continues with a pair of road games at Penn and Princeton. Action from the Palestra in Philadelphia will tip off on Friday at 7 p.m., while Jadwin Gymnasium in Princeton, N.J. hosts a 6 p.m. contest with the Tigers on Saturday.
