NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale University
Athletics Department will be hosting a Women’s Basketball
Coaches Association (WBCA) Pink Zone event this Saturday, Feb. 20,
at Payne Whitney Gymnasium in New Haven. The festivities, which
will raise money for the Smilow Cancer Hospital at Yale-New Haven
to be designated for breast cancer research, will begin at 10 a.m.
and will include a Yale gymnastics meet (1 p.m.) and women’s
basketball game (7 p.m.) as a part of the day-long event.
The first formal event of the day begins at 10 a.m., with the
“Battle of the Badges” bench press competition in the
Brooks-Dwyer Varsity Weight Room. The event will consist of teams
of three, with each participant in the competition bench-pressing a
percentage of his or her body weight. The team posting the most
total repetitions will be declared the winner. One division will be
exclusively comprised of police, fire and medical personnel, who
will compete for the right to call themselves the 2010 Battle of
the Badges Champions. There will also be an open division, which
will feature several teams comprised of Yale football players and
other Yale Athletics personnel. The Yale football team will also
serve as spotters for the competition.
At 1 p.m., the Yale gymnastics squad will compete against in-state
rivals Bridgeport and Southern Connecticut State. The Bulldogs will
also be hosting their Youth Day, Alumnae Day and Senior Day
festivities during the meet with the Purple Knights and the Owls.
Yale’s gymnasts will be signing autographs for fans shortly
after the conclusion of the meet.
While the John J. Lee Amphitheater is hosting gymnastics, the
hallway of Payne Whitney Gym will be the site of a health fair. The
health fair will feature local vendors and health specialists
providing advice and informational brochures pertaining to leading
a healthier lifestyle.
The main event of the day-long event will be Ivy League
women’s basketball action as the Bulldogs host Ancient Eight
rival Penn at 7 p.m. Fans will have chances to win raffle prizes
and giveaways and to participate in various contests throughout the
game. Admission to the contest is free with a donation. WBCA Pink
Zone t-shirts and game programs will also be for sale, with all of
the net proceeds also being donated to the Smilow Cancer Hospital
at Yale-New Haven.
The Yale-New Haven Hospital mammography van will also be at Payne
Whitney Gym on Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. For more
