Freshman Guard Matches Yale Record with Sixth Ivy League Rookie of the Week Award

Ivy League Week 17 Release

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — Youth has served the Yale University women's basketball team well this season, and freshman guard Sarah Halejian has been the unquestionable leader of this season's youth movement.

Halejian, Yale's No. 3 leading scorer behind junior guard Megan Vasquez (15.3 ppg.) and sophomore guard Janna Graf (10.6 ppg.), has averaged 8.5 points, 2.4 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.5 steals per game this season.

In Ivy League play, Halejian has been even more impressive, averaging 9.1 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.2 assists, and 1.6 steals per game in Yale's 12 Ivy League games to date.

Over this weekend's Ivy League games at Columbia and Cornell, Halejian proved to be Yale's steadiest hand, and for her efforts this weekend, the Ivy League named Halejian its Rookie of the Week, the League office announced on Monday.

It is the sixth time this season that Halejian has earned recognition as the Ivy League Rookie of the Week. That ties a Yale record for the most Rookie of the Week awards in a season by a single player. Melissa Colborne (2007) and Katy Grubs (1996) each won six Rookie of the Week awards. Both players went on to win the Ivy League's Rookie of the Year that season.

"Sarah has quietly become a very consistent and important player on this team," said Chris Gobrecht, the Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954, Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "A big reason for her steady progress is that she is a good listener and wants to get better every day. The whole team is proud of her accomplishments."

With this week's honor, Halejian moves into select company among Ivy League stars. She joins Princeton's Niveen Rasheed (nine), Penn's Alyssa Baron, and Harvard's Brogan Berry as current players who earned at least six Rookie of the Week awards. Rasheed, Berry and Baron also went on to win the Rookie of the Year honor.

In a stunning loss at Columbia on Friday, Halejian was one of the few bright spots. She scored 12 points, grabbed a career-high six rebounds and dished out three assists to lead Yale in the 56-52 loss at Columbia. She also had three steals. She shot 5-for-11 overall and 1-for-4 from 3-point range.

In the 69-58 win at Cornell on Saturday, Halejian scored seven points with four rebounds, four assists and three steals.

For the weekend, Halejian averaged 9.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 3.0 steals. In the two games over the weekend, she shot a combined 8-for-19 (42.1 percent).

The Ivy League named Princeton's Lauren Edwards its Player of the Week, while Graf earned a spot on the Weekly Honor Roll.

Halejian is the fourth Bulldog to earn Ivy League weekly honors this season. Freshman Hayden Latham was the Ivy League's Rookie of the Week last week, while Graf and Vasquez have each been named Ivy League Player of the Week once this season.
