Bulldogs' 9-Day Tour of Ireland to Include Visits to Galway, Cork, Dublin and Belfast

The Yale women's basketball team is taking a nine-day tour of Ireland. Periodically during the trip, the players and staff will write about the experience and share photos on a blog that will begin on the afternoon of Saturday, Aug. 10, the day before the team departs New Haven.

NEW HAVEN, Conn. — The Yale University women's basketball team will get an early start to the 2013-14 season when the squad embarks on a tour of Ireland, departing New Haven on Sunday, Aug. 11. The Bulldogs will spend nine days experiencing the beauty, wonder and magic of Ireland.

Yale great John Lee '58 set up an endowment several years ago that allows the team to make a foreign trip once every four years.

"We are thrilled for this opportunity and owe it the support of our Yale administration and the generosity of the John Lee endowment," said Chris Gobrecht, the Joel E. Smilow, Class of 1954, Head Coach of Women's Basketball. "We are really looking forward to this incredible opportunity and believe it can be a great way to bond and prepare for the new season."

The tour will include visits to Galway, Cork, Dublin, and Belfast, with games scheduled against Galway Select, Cork Select, the Meteors Basketball Club, one of the oldest and most successful women's basketball clubs in Dublin, and an exhibition against Rockets Select in Belfast.

Yale will also take part in a pair of clinics, including one hosted by PeacePlayers International in Northern Ireland. The organization's Northern Ireland was recognized in 2007 by ESPN, which awarded the prestigious Arthur Ashe Award for Courage at the 2007 ESPY Awards for their work in using basketball to unite and educate young people from Protestant and Catholic communities.

The NCAA allows five days of practice time for teams making foreign trips during the offseason, and Yale started its preparation on Monday, Aug. 5.

The Bulldogs are scheduled to return to New Haven on Tuesday, Aug. 20.
