NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's basketball team has earned a berth in the Women's Basketball Invitational and will play at Northeastern in the opening round Thursday at 7:00 p.m. The Bulldogs and Huskies were two of 16 teams selected for the tournament field, which was announced on Monday night. The winner of Thursday's game will advance to the quarterfinals and play the winner of the Binghamton-Youngstown State matchup.

This will be Yale's first appearance in the WBI, and the Bulldogs' first appearance in any national postseason tournament since making the WNIT in 2011. Yale (15-13, 8-6 Ivy League) finished fourth in the Ivy League, earning a berth in the league's postseason tournament for the first time. The Bulldogs fell to Princeton in the semifinals Saturday.

Northeastern (16-14, 11-7 CAA) lost in the CAA quarterfinals this past Thursday. The Huskies had won four of five games prior to that. They have played one Ivy League team so far this season, falling to Harvard 79-69 in December. They are ranked No. 145 in the RPI, while Yale is No. 126.

The WBI is in its ninth season and features a 16 team, single-elimination bracket. Teams are picked based on RPI, record, conference standings, end of year performance and quality wins and losses.

All WBI games are played on campus sites. The schedule is:

  • Wed. & Thurs., Mar. 14 & 15 – First Round
  • Sun. & Mon., Mar. 18 & 19 – Second Round
  • Fri. & Sat., Mar. 23 & 24– Semifinal Round
  • Wed. & Thurs., Mar. 28 or 29 – Championship Round

Yale is the third Ivy League team to play in the WBI. Penn earned a berth in the tournament in 2013 and went on to win the Ivy League title in 2014. Brown appeared in last year's tournament, winning at UMBC in the first round before falling to UNCG in the quarterfinals.
