Rams Top Bulldogs 59-53

Jan. 10, 2006
NEW HAVEN, CONN. -- Freshman Jamie Van Horne (Healdsburg, Calif.) was one of three Bulldogs to reach double-digits in scoring with a team-high 15 points, but Yale was unable to overcome Fordham in non-conference action Tuesday night. The Rams were led offensively by 22 points from guard Lisa Carrol.
The teams felt their way through the opening minutes, with Yale taking an early 9-5 lead on a Stephanie Marciano (Edison, N.J.) layup at the 11:20 mark. Two of Carrrol's 10 free throws tied the game minutes later, starting a 9-0 Ram run to go on top 15-9. The six point cushion would be the largest of the half, as Yale undertook the task of whittling away at it. The Bulldogs got to within one after captain Chinenye Okafor (Rolla, Mo.) converted a pair of free throws with 1:58 left. She finished the night with 12 points. Both teams would hit a basket in the closing minute to preserve the one point Ram lead going into the locker room.
Fordham came out strong in the second half, going up by as many as eight within the first 10 minutes. The Bulldogs, however, fought back with a 7-0 run punctuated by a Van Horne trey to cut the lead back to one with 9:58 to play.
The score remained close until a 10-0 run by the Rams gave them an 11 point edge at 54-43 with 1:55 left. The Bulldogs showed some resiliency, playing hard until the final whistle where Van Horne canned another triple to close the scoring at 59-53.
Erica Davis (Columbus, N.J.) scored 10 points for the Bulldogs off the bench.
The loss drops Yale to 1-12 on the season while Fordham improves to 6-7 (1-1 A10). The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday in the first game of a men's and women's Ivy League doubleheader with Brown. The women tip off at 4pm with the men scheduled for a 7pm tip.
