Jan. 23, 2008
AMHERST, Mass.--The Yale women's basketball team couldn't stop Pam Rosanio, Stefanie Gerardot and Kate Mills on Tuesday night. The trio combined for 58 points in leading Massachusetts (9-9) to a 91-57 victory over the Bulldogs (3-11) at the Mullins Center in each team's final non-conference game of the season. Rosanio had 23 points and three steals, while Gerardot tallied 18 points, four assists and three steals. Mills went 7-for-8 from the field for 17 points and added seven assists.
The Minutewomen shot 63.5 percent (33-of-52) from the field in the game and 72.7 percent (16-of-22) in the second half. Massachusetts outscored Yale 50-20 in the paint and converted 23 Bulldog turnovers into 34 points.
After Massachusetts scored the first six points of the game, Yale countered with layups by Melissa Colborne and Lindsey Williams to make it 6-4. The Minutewomen went on a 13-0 run over the next 3:21 to go up 19-4 before a pair of Williams treys got the Bulldogs within 11 at 21-10. Williams cut the deficit to ten when her traditional three-point play made it 30-20 at the 6:13 mark. However, Massachusetts ended the half on a 14-4 run and took a 44-24 lead into the locker room. The Minutewomen shot 56.7 percent (17-of-30) from the field in the first half.
Yale opened the second half on a 5-0 run after a Jamie Van Horne trey and a Colborne layup, then cut the margin to 12 when Yoyo Greenfield drained a three to make it 48-36 with 16:37 remaining. After a Mills basket, Greenfield nailed her second consecutive three-pointer to pull the Bulldogs within 50-39. However, that would be as close as they would get. Massachusetts went on a 31-10 run over the next 10:26 to open up an 81-49 advantage. Yale trimmed its deficit to 27 when Ashley Easley's jumper made it 82-55 with 2:10 to go, but the Minutewomen ended the game on a 9-2 clip to secure a 91-57 victory.
Williams led the Bulldogs with 13 points. Greenfield added 11 points and Colborne chipped in with 10. Mady Gobrecht tied a career-high with 10 rebounds and dished out six assists. The Bulldogs shot 38.2 percent (21-of-55) from the field, including 38.1 percent (8-of-21) from downtown, and 77.8 percent (7-of-9) from the line.
All 11 players who saw action for the Minutewomen scored at least one point. Cerie Mosgrove had nine points off the bench on three three-pointers. Sakera Young had four assists and four of Massachusetts' 19 steals. Stephanie Lawrence pulled down five rebounds for the Minutewomen, who outrebounded the Bulldogs 31-27. Yale's string of two consecutive games not allowing a three-pointer came to an end. The Minutewomen shot 50 percent (4-of-8) from behind the arc and 80.8 percent (21-of-26) at the free throw line.
For the Bulldogs, it's only Ivy League games from here on out. Yale returns home for the only time in a 40-day span on Saturday when Brown (1-14, 0-1 Ivy) visits the John J. Lee Amphitheater for a 7 p.m. tilt. The Bulldogs snapped their 15-game Ivy League road losing streak with a 52-45 victory over the Bears in Providence last weekend.
