Feb. 11, 2006
ITHACA, N.Y. -- Cornell freshman Jeomi Maduka scored a career-high 29 points, including 17 in the first half an Lindsay Krasna dropped in 25 more to lead Cornell to a 79-68 victory over Yale on Saturday night in Newman Arena. Junior Chinenye Okafor (Rolla, Mo.) tied a season-high with 17 points and grabbed 10 rebounds, but it wouldn't be enough to overcome the duo of Maduka and Krasna.
After trading baskets in the opening minutes, Cornell set out to control the pace. The Big Red built the lead up to 10 at the half, thanks to converting 14 of 15 free throw attempts in the half. Yale hit only five of six in the stanza.
The Big Red nurtured the lead to as many as 20 in the second half, but the resilient Bulldogs fought back, getting back to within striking range at 68-58 with just over six minutes left, but Cornell had enough in them to hold off the depleted Bulldogs over the duration.
Yale's front court duo of Sara McCollum (Old Lyme, Conn.) and Julie Mantilla (Arlington Heights, Ill.) both fouled out with over eight minutes left. Mantilla had a season high eight points to go along with three blocks when her night was finished while McCollum ended her night with two ponits.
Stephanie Marciano (Edison, N.J.) set a career-high scoring mark in the game, dropping in 11 points. Kaitlyn Lillemoe also had a strong offensive showing, scoring 12 points.
The loss drops Yale to 2-17 (1-7 Ivy) while Cornell improves to 7-14 (4-4 Ivy).
Yale returns to action on Friday, when the Bulldogs host Dartmouth to open up a four-game home stand. Tip off is set for 7 p.m.
