Helped Yale Varsity Eight To Second Place Finish At 2004 NCAA Championship
NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Ashley Brzozowicz '04, an All-American during her rowing career at Yale, has been named to the Canadian eight that will compete at the 2010 World Rowing Championships in New Zealand from Oct. 31 to Nov. 7.
Brzozowicz is a veteran with Canadian Rowing. She joined the team full-time in 2006 and has competed in numerous international regattas, including the 2008 Olympics.
"I had a great experience at the 2008 Olympics but as an athlete I knew I could be faster," Brzozowicz said. "I am inspired to keep rowing because there is always something to learn, to work on. Our team has generated some great momentum this season, and it is very exciting to train in that sort of environment."
The women's eight is a top medal contender at the world championships for Canada after finishing second in the World Cup.
At Yale, Brzozowicz was in the No. 6 seat in Yale's varsity eight that finished second at the 2004 NCAA Championships. She was the first athlete to row under head coach Will Porter's tutelage to earn a spot in the Olympics.
"I think the biggest thing I learned from Will about rowing at the national team level was to not expect it to be like rowing at Yale," Brzozowicz said. "If you want to make the transition from university rowing to rowing at the international level, you have to be very certain of your goals. You need to know that you are training and competing to represent your country and that there is not the same safety net of classmates and community that you experience [in college]. That advice really helped me to be prepared for an environment where you are training towards excellence every day."
Brzozowicz, who still stays in touch with Porter, also remains a big fan and supporter of Yale women's crew.
"I love to watch YWC results online," she said. "Yale is certainly a force in women's rowing, and I am so proud of all the success that they have achieved."
Brzozowicz also was excited when Catherine Hart '10, who helped the Bulldogs to the NCAA varsity eight title last spring, joined the Canadian team following graduation. Hart rowed for Canada at the 2010 World Rowing Under 23 Championships in July.
It is likely that there will be other former Yale rowers joining Brzozowicz in New Zealand. Taylor Ritzel '10 and Jamie Redman '08 are both strong candidates to be on the United States' roster, which will be released in the coming weeks.
