  • Strong Showing For Bulldogs At Under-23 World Championships

    The Yale contingent at 2013 Under-23 World Rowing Championships in Linz, Austria, all turned in fine performances for U.S. Rowing. Rising senior Maddie Lips was 11th in the single scull, an improvement from her 15th-place finish last year. Rising senior Kim Szokol sat in the two seat of the women’s four that placed eighth, and rising junior Kristina Wagner finished 12th in the 2- with partner Elizabeth Fitzhenry.

    It doesn’t get much better for the Yale varsity eight. The Bulldogs knocked off two of their biggest rivals in a three-day span. After edging Radcliffe on Saturday, Yale cruised to a nearly nine-second victory over Brown in a rare Monday race on the Housatonic River.

    The spring season is about at the halfway mark so Saturday’s Yale-Princeton regatta was a good gauge of where the two perennial Ivy League title contenders stand heading down the stretch. It was the seventh-ranked Tigers that made the big statement. Princeton won all five races, including the varsity eight to retain the Eisenberg Cup, on the Housatonic River.

    Another cup is back in the hands of the Yale women’s crew. The Bulldogs’ varsity eight cruised to a five-second victory Saturday on the Charles River, defeating Clemson, Boston University and Dartmouth. The wins over BU and the Big Green allowed Yale to reclaim the Class of 1985 Cup.
