Big Test For Bulldogs Saturday In Boston

Yale Faces Dartmouth, Boston University, Clemson

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale women's crew will face a pair of old rivals and a relative unknown on Saturday in Boston. The Bulldogs face Dartmouth and Boston University for the Class of 1985 Cup, but the race will have a twist this year as Clemson will compete as well. The action gets under way just after 9 a.m. on the Charles River.

With the NCAA expanding the championship field to 22 teams, which includes more automatic qualifiers, it is important for the Bulldogs to face out-of-region competition.

"This is a big race for us," said Yale head coach Will Porter. "It has a little of everything – an Ivy League rival, a Colonial Conference team and an ACC team. With the new NCAA format of AQs, this gives us a chance to overlap with other conferences."

Yale is coming off a strong performance last weekend at Cornell. The Bulldogs won four of the five races, including the varsity eight to reclaim the Cayuga Cup.

"We are still working to find our best lineups," Porter said. "We are not there yet. We have to see how we come out and race."

The battle for the Class of 1985 Cup was memorable but heartbreaking for the Bulldogs last year. Both Yale and Dartmouth were clocked at 6:22.8 in the varsity eight, but the Big Green was declared the winner after a video review. Boston University finished third in 6:28.0.

Clemson isn't a completely unfamiliar foe for the Bulldogs, who have seen the Tigers at NCAA Championships over the years. Clemson was ranked 15th in the Apr. 3 CRCA/USRowing national poll, the Tigers highest ranking since early in 2012.
