    Yale’s varsity eight exacted some revenge in its first race at the Royal Henley Regatta in England. The Bulldogs edged the British national crew that had beaten them two weeks ago in the final of the elite eight at the Henley Women’s Regatta. Yale finished with a time of 7:37, to win by more than a length.

Head Coach Will Porter has been pleased with his team’s focus during the trip, which started with the Henley Women’s Regatta two weeks ago.

    The Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association has announced several of its post season awards, and several members of the Yale women’s crew have been honored. Senior Claire Tolson earned first-team All-New England recognition, while eight Bulldogs – Martha Cosgrove, Christine Devlin, Amina Edwards, Katharine Freeman, Laura Grimbergen, Kristjana Gudmundsson, Maddie Lips and Colleen Maher – were selected as Scholar Athletes.

  • Yale Honors Seven Seniors and One Team at Senior Student-Athlete Reception

    Seven seniors and one team were honored by the Yale Athletics Department with awards at the annual senior student-athlete reception Saturday afternoon at the Lanman Center in Payne Whitney Gymnasium. The men’s fencing team earned the Brodhead Award for highest team grade point average. Paige Decker (New Preston, Conn.) of the women’s ice hockey team, Jane Kozey (Ansonia, Conn.) of the women’s crew team and Beau Palin (Oconomowoc, Wisc.) of the football team were the recipients of the Ford Student-Athlete Community Outreach Award. Tucker Kocher (San Francisco, Calif.) of the men’s soccer team and Brenda Seah (Singapore) of the women’s fencing team were the recipients of the Kiphuth Student-Athlete Distinction Award. Pat Killian (Nashville, Tenn.) of the men’s swimming and diving team and Kallie Parchman (Baltimore, Md.) of the women’s lacrosse team were the recipients of the Meyer Humanitarian Award.

    More than 200 alumni and friends came to the Gilder Boathouse on Saturday to celebrate the 40th anniversary of women’s crew at Yale. They were treated to an impressive performance from Yale’s varsity eight as well. The Bulldogs cruised to a nearly five-second victory over Radcliffe to retain the Nathaniel H. Case Cup.

    Yale’s varsity four remained undefeated with a narrow victory, but Princeton retained possession of the Eisenberg Cup on Saturday on Lake Carnegie with a varsity eight victory.

    For the first time in nearly a month, the Yale women’s crew will race away from the Housatonic River. The Bulldogs travel to New Jersey to face Princeton on Saturday. The first race is set for 9 a.m., and the varsity eight race will determine the winner of the Eisenberg Cup.
  • No. 11 Bulldogs Take Down Dartmouth, BU
    April 12, 2014
    It was another perfect day on the Housatonic River for the Yale women’s crew, both in terms of the racing and the weather. Yale’s varsity eight retained possession of the Class of 1985 Cup by defeating Dartmouth and Boston University. The Bulldogs finished in 6:07.6, nearly four seconds faster than Dartmouth (6:10.4). BU was third in 6:28.7.

    For the third straight Saturday, the Yale women’s crew will race on the Housatonic River at the Gilder Boathouse. The Bulldogs host Dartmouth and Boston University starting with the second varsity four at 7:30 a.m. The varsity eights row at 9:15 a.m. with the winner claiming the Class of 1985 Cup.

    The Yale women’s crew turned in another solid performance, sweeping Cornell on the Housatonic River on Saturday. By winning the varsity eight race, the Bulldogs retained the Cayuga Cup. Yale’s four other crews all won handily.

  • Bulldogs Reclaim Connell Cup; Sweep Penn, Columbia

    The Connell Cup is back where it has resided for most of the last decade. Yale’s varsity eight cruised to a victory over both Penn and Columbia on the Housatonic River. The Bulldogs finished in 6:12, more than seven seconds faster than Penn and nine seconds better than Columbia. Yale also won each of the other four races to sweep the river.

    The Yale women’s crew opened the spring season with an impressive performance, capturing the Longhorn Invitational at the University of Texas last weekend. The Bulldogs get back to more familiar opponents when they host Columbia and Penn at the Gilder Boathouse on Saturday. The first race is slated to go off at 8:30 a.m.

    The Yale women’s crew has had a top-10 national finish in 11 of the last 12 years. If the annual CRCA preseason national rankings are to be believed, the Bulldogs will add to that streak this year. Yale is ranked seventh in the first CRCA poll.

    Yale captured the team title at the Longhorn Invitational on Sunday. Yale’s five crews all cruised to victories over San Diego on the second day of racing to clinch the crown for the Bulldogs.

    The ice on the Housatonic River has just about melted, but the Yale women’s crew doesn’t have to worry about that. The Bulldogs open the spring season at the Longhorn Invitational this weekend in Austin, Texas, where the high temperature on Saturday is expected to reach 77 degrees.
