DERBY, Conn. - The No. 1 ranked Yale varsity eight opened the spring season in impressive fashion by topping both Penn and Columbia on the Housatonic River to capture the Connell Cup. The Bulldogs finished in 6:20.7, nearly three seconds ahead of second-place Penn (6:23.5). Columbia placed third in 6:38.6.
Gusty winds made for difficult racing conditions, but Yale still captured the three other races that were held. In the second varsity eight, the Bulldogs cruised to a nearly 17-second victory, finishing in 6:16.8. Penn was second (6:33.8), followed by the Lions (6:48.0).
The closest race of the day was the novice eight. Yale finished first in 6:43.1, a little more than a second ahead of Penn (6:44.3). Columbia was third (7:23.9).
In the varsity four, the Bulldogs finished first in 6:54.0. Penn was a distant second (7:27.0) and Columbia was third (7:33.1).
Yale hosts Cornell and Syracuse next Saturday at 9 a.m. at the Gilder Boathouse.
