No. 1 Yale Retains Class of 1985 Cup
April 11, 2009
BOSTON, Mass. - Yale's varsity eight, the top-ranked women's crew in the nation, won its first two races of the spring season by more than 10 seconds each. The Bulldogs were challenged a bit more on Saturday but still emerged victorious, topping Dartmouth and Boston University on the Charles River to win the Class of 1985 Cup for the 10th straight year. Yale finished in 6:36.92, nearly five seconds ahead of second-place Dartmouth, who crossed the line in 6:41.85. BU was third in 6:46.04.
"Our varsity eight is still working out the details in covering 2,000 meters," said Yale head coach Will Porter.
The Bulldogs' other four boats all rowed to easy victories to remain undefeated. The second varsity eight cruised to a 13-second win by finishing in 6:45.02. Dartmouth (6:58.02) was second. In the varsity four, Yale was first with a time of 7:26.25, nearly 25 seconds faster than second-place Boston University (7:51.37). The Bulldogs' novice eight won by nearly 20 seconds with a time of 6:56.17, and in the second varsity four, Yale had the top two boats. The Yale B came in at 7:44.83, and the Yale C had a time of 7:52.18.
"We rowed well as a squad," Porter said. "Our lower boats seem on track."
The races were held with a cross-tail wind at about 11 mph and a light chop.
The Bulldogs will have their first home race next Saturday when they host Princeton on the Housatonic River. Yale will celebrate its 35th anniversary of women's crew and honor the 1979 championship team. Click here for more information.
