PRINCETON, N.J. - The Yale women's crew team lost its first race of the year today, finishing second in the Eisenberg Cup. Princeton successfully retained the Eisenberg Cup, and Virginia finished third.
Yale entered boats into five of the six races, but didn't manage to make it first across the finish line all morning. The Bulldogs finished second in four of their five races, losing to Princeton in the varsity 8, the novice 8, and the varsity 4. Virginia won the second varsity race as well as the varsity four `B', in which Yale finished in fourth place.
The Yale varsity 8, stroked by Cara Dermody, couldn't repeat its upset of the Tigers at Eastern Sprints in 2005. The Bulldogs lined up with Dermody, Jane Moore (seven), Maria Stevens (six), Rachel Jeffers (five), Jamie Redman (four), Jennifer Hansen (three), Joanna Hess (two), and Suzanne Salgado (bow). Coxed by Emily Cleveland, they finished nine seconds behind the Princeton varsity 8.
Yale's second varsity 8 and varsity 4 both kept their races closer. The second varsity finished four seconds behind Virginia, while the varsity four was five seconds behind Princeton.
Next weekend, the Bulldogs will race out of Gilder Boathouse for the last time this season as they host Radcliffe in the Case Cup.
