PROVIDENCE, R.I. - The Yale women's crew varsity eight, which entered the day ranked first in the nation, suffered its first loss of the season, falling to No. 10 Brown on the Seekonk River. The Bears finished in 6:02.1, nearly five seconds better than Yale, which came in at 6:07.25. It was the Bulldogs' first loss since April 29, 2006, which also came at Brown.
Yale's varsity four remained undefeated by posting a nearly three-second victory, but Brown handed the Bulldogs' second varsity eight its first loss of the season.
The Bears are the defending NCAA team champion, while Yale's varsity eight won the Grand Final at the NCAA Championships last spring.
"We just finished the hardest three-week stretch any team has gone through. We've raced Princeton, Tennessee, Virginia, Radcliffe and Brown. All teams that are ranked at or near the top 10," said Yale head coach Will Porter. "Now, we will have a week off to regroup. We definitely have a little bit of work to do before the Eastern Sprints."
The varsity eight race was virtually even after 500 meters, but Brown edged out in front over the second 500 and led the rest of the way.
"We just never got our rhythm in the piece," Porter said.
Brown regained the Nat and Anne Case Cup with the victory.
Yale's varsity four kept its perfect season going. The Bulldogs finished the 2,000-meter course in 6:51.30, while Brown came in at 6:54.33.
In the second varsity eight, the Bears crossed the line in 6:07.60, nearly 10 seconds ahead of Yale, which finished in 6:17.27.
Yale won the varsity four B race, while the Bears captured the novice eight and novice four races.
The Bulldogs are off until May 18 when they compete in the Eastern Sprints on the Cooper River in Camden, N.J.
