Yale Rowers Finish First and Second At the CRASH-B World Indoor Rowing Championship

March 3, 2006

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Maria Stevens and Alexis Fleckenstein competed at the C.R.A.S.H.-B. Indoor World Championship held in the Agganis Arena at Boston University on Feb. 25. Stevens (6:44.2) finished first in the Open Collegiate and third in the International, losing to Rika Geyser (6:40.2) of South Africa and Anna-Marie de Zwager (6:42.7) of Canada.

In an amazing display of physical and mental strength, Stevens rowed stroke for stroke with the two international oarswomen until the final 200 meters where she was out distanced.

In the collegiate division, Stevens cruised to victory. Fleckenstein (7:00.3) finished a respectable but distant second, 15 seconds behind Stevens.

Both athletes traveled on their own to Boston to compete in the race as Yale does not participate in the event as a team.

"They did a nice job," said Yale Head Coach Will Porter "If you're going to travel all the way up there, you better go fast and they did."
