The Yale women's crew team will open their spring season tomorrow morning when they face Ivy League competition in the form of Columbia and Penn. The Bulldogs will compete with the Lions and Quakers for the Connell Cup, held this year at Pelham Bay.
Yale beat both Penn and Columbia when the three teams last met at the Belly of the Carnegie regatta back in November. The Bulldogs will want to repeat that success tomorrow and continue their dominance of this annual race. Yale has lifted the Connell Cup five times in the last six years.
Last year, Head Coach Will Porter led his crew to a sensational season, finishing 7th at the NCAAs and winning two titles at Henley. Porter's squad includes two former All-Americans in Rachel Jeffers and Maria Stevens, as well as Alexis Fleckenstein, who finished second at last month's Crash-B World Indoor Rowing Championship behind team mate Stevens.
After their spring break training trip in Sarasota, FL, the Bulldogs will be competing in slightly worse weather Sunday morning. The forecast calls for rain in the morning, and temperatures in the mid 40s. Penn and Columbia are also returning to Northeast waters after trips to sunnier climes. The Quakers and the Lions traveled to South Carolina and Florida respectively.
