Bulldogs Host Cornell & Syracuse Saturday

April 2, 2008

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale Head Coach Will Porter called the conditions last Saturday on the Housatonic River among the worst he has ever seen. The Bulldogs still managed to win all four races that were held, including the varsity eight. Hopefully, the river will be calmer when Yale returns to the Gilder Boathouse to host Cornell and Syracuse this Saturday morning beginning at 8:30 a.m. The teams will be racing for the Cayuga Cup.

"We're looking to improve on last week's performance and take the next step," Porter said. "We're also hoping for some flat water."

Despite defeating both Penn and Columbia, the Bulldogs' varsity eight dropped to second in this week's CRCA/US Rowing national poll. California, which defeated Notre Dame, Virginia and Ohio State last weekend at the Pac-10 Challenge, took over the top spot.

Cornell is receiving votes in the national poll. The Big Red will be racing for the first time this spring on Saturday. Syracuse's varsity eight fell to Boston University in its opener last Saturday on the Onondaga Lake Outlet. The Orange finished in 7:23.2, nearly five seconds behind BU.

Last year in Ithaca, N.Y., Yale's varsity cruised to a nearly 16-second victory over Syracuse. Cornell was third. The Bulldogs also won the second varsity eight, varsity four, varsity four B and novice eight races.
