NEW HAVEN, Conn. - After opening the spring season by capturing the Connell Cup last weekend, Yale's women's crew will try to add another piece of hardware to its collection. The Bulldogs travel to upstate New York to compete against Cornell and Syracuse at the Onondaga Lake Outlet in Longbranch Park, N.Y. Due to the weather forecast for Saturday the race has been move to Friday afternoon. The varsity eight race is tentatively scheduled for 6 p.m. and the winner gets the Cayuga Cup.
Yale's varsity eight remained No. 1 in this week's Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/US Rowing national poll. The Bulldogs, who received 20 of 25 first-place votes, cruised to a nearly 11-second victory in last Saturday's race with Penn and Columbia. Yale boats also won the second varsity, varsity four, varsity four B and novice eight races.
Syracuse won four of six races against Boston University last weekend on the Charles River. In the varsity eight race, the Orange finished 4.5 seconds behind BU. Syracuse won the novice four, second varsity four, second varsity eight and novice eight races.
Cornell's second varsity, varsity four, novice eight and second novice eight boats were all victorious at the Ithaca College Invitational last Saturday. In the varsity eight race, the Big Red fell by less than a second to Ithaca.
Yale has won the Cayuga Cup in each of the last seven years. Last year, the Bulldogs' varsity eight finished nearly 10 seconds ahead of second-place Cornell. The Bulldogs also won the second varsity and varsity four races.
