NEW HAVEN, Conn. - Yale and Brown have had some memorable races in recent years. Last year, the varsity eights met three times. The Bears won the first two, including a one-second victory at the Eastern Sprints. The Bulldogs, though, earned some revenge by edging Brown to capture the Grand Final at the NCAA Championships. The first of what could be three meetings again this spring is Saturday on the Housatonic River in Derby. Racing begins at 11 a.m. at the Gilder Boathouse.
"The key to our success this weekend is to be ready to go from the first stroke, stay internal and row to our ability," said Yale head coach Will Porter. "If we do that, we will be in business."
Saturday is the final race of the regular season. The Eastern Sprints are May 17 and the NCAA Championships are May 29-31. Both competitions will take place on the Cooper River in Cherry Hill, N.J.
"I think we are on track as a team," Porter said. "There is always more we want to work on. All of our crews have more speed in them, and we are all doing everything we can to get to our full potential before the end of the season."
Yale and Brown each figure to be strong contenders at the Sprints and NCAA championships. The Bulldogs' varsity eight has won the last two NCAA titles, while the Bears are the two-time defending NCAA team champions. This spring, Yale's varsity is undefeated and ranked second in the nation, behind only California. Brown is ranked 10th. The Bears' only losses have come to Ohio State, Michigan and Princeton. The varsity eight race will go off at 11:20 a.m. and the teams will be competing for the Nat & Anne Case Cup.
The other five races also should be very competitive. Yale's second varsity, varsity four and novice eight were all seeded first in the April 28 EAWRC Coaches Poll, while the Bears are second in each of those boats.
