Yale Earns NCAA Bid For Fifth Straight Year

May 16, 2006

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The Yale women's crew team has been selected to compete in the 2006 NCAA Division I Women's Rowing Championships. The championships will be held May 26-28 at Finn Caspersen Rowing Center in West Windsor, New Jersey.

The Bulldogs were selected after finishing third overall in the EAWRC Sprints, which were held on Sunday, May 14. Their highest finish came in the junior varsity eight, where the Yale boat finished second behind overall winners Brown.

At last year's NCAA Championships, Yale finished seventh overall, with the varsity eight winning valuable points with their fifth place finish in the grand final. The varsity four and second varsity eight both finished in the top three of the petite final.

Although this will be the first time in 2006 that Coach Will Porter's squad will face west coast opposition, there will be some familiar faces in Windsor. Yale's Ivy rivals Brown and Princeton have also been selected for the NCAA Championships. The two are the only crews that have beaten Yale's varsity eight this year.

The following teams join Yale in the field: Brown, California, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Ohio State, Princeton, Stanford, Tennessee, Washington, Washington State, and Wisconsin. Four at large bids were also also selected from Boston University, Minnesota, Southern California, and UCLA.
