NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The defending national champion Yale women's crew team takes to the water for the first time since last spring this Saturday. The Bulldogs will take part in the 14th annual Head of the Housatonic, which features boats from colleges and clubs throughout the Northeast.
The women's collegiate 8+, which starts at 2:00 p.m., includes Columbia, UConn, Fairfield, Fordham, UMass, Rhode Island and Yale. The Bulldogs also have boats entered in the women's collegiate 4+, which starts at 10:15 a.m. and features crews from Columbia, Fairfield, Iona, Manhattan, Marist, UMass and Rhode Island.
Yale is captained by Christina Person, who was the No. 7 seat in Yale varsity eight that won the NCAA title last June. Seven members of that eight return this year -- Person, junior Taylor Ritzel, junior Tess Gerrand, junior Alice Henly, junior Maren McCrea, sophomore Caroline Nash and senior Christine Glandorf. Junior coxswain Mia Kanak is back as well.
The Bulldogs placed three boats in the top five in the collegiate eights at the Head of the Housatonic last year, with the 1V finishing first in 14:42.864. The 2V was third in 15:37.017, while the 3V recorded a time of 16:08.565 and placed fifth. The Northeastern 1V claimed second. Yale's 1F won the Novice Eights.
