Yale Honors Five Seniors and One Team with Annual Awards at Senior Reception
Five seniors and one team were honored by the Yale Athletics Department with awards at the annual senior student-athlete reception Saturday afternoon at the Lanman Center in Payne Whitney Gymnasium. The women's fencing team earned the Brodhead Award for highest team grade point average. Alfonso Costa (Pittsburgh, Pa.) of the men’s basketball and men’s lacrosse teams and Annie Killian (Nashville, Tenn.) of the women’s swimming & diving team were the recipients of the Ford Student-Athlete Community Outreach Award. Lidia Gocheva (Sofia, Bulgaria) of the women’s fencing team and Alex Gornitzky (Toms River, N.J.) of the men’s swimming and diving team were the recipients of the Kiphuth Student-Athlete Distinction Award. Killian and Shane Bannon (Southbury, Conn.) of the football team were the recipients of the Meyer Humanitarian Award.

Fencing Holds Annual Banquet, Elects Captains
At the Yale fencing teams’ annual end of year banquet on Apr. 23, a number of fencers were celebrated for their efforts this past season and the new captains for next season were announced. Junior Shiv Kachru will captain the men’s team while sophomore Robyn Shaffer will lead the women’s team.

Ivy League Releases 2011 Winter Academic All-Ivy Recipients
The Ivy League has released its list of student-athletes selected for 2011 All-Ivy Academic honors in winter sports. The 80 men and women, including 10 from Yale, were starters or key reserves on an officially recognized varsity team with 3.0 or better cumulative grade point averages.

Bulldogs Finish 12th at NCAAs
Senior epeeist Tasha Garcia and sophomore sabreist Madeline Oliver concluded competition in the NCAA Fencing Championship for Yale on Sunday. With eight points from Oliver's finish in sabre competition (20th) and five points from Garcia's finish in epee competition (21st), combined with 37 points from the Yale men's team on the first two days of competition, Yale finished in 12th with 50 points. Notre Dame won with 174 points.

Senior epeeist Tasha Garcia and sophomore sabreist Madeline Oliver both competed in the NCAAs for Yale on Saturday, and both finished the day in 22nd place.

Fencing Heads to NCAA Championships
Two fencers from the Yale women's fencing team will be participating in the NCAA National Championships this week. Captain Maddie Oliver will be competing in the saber portion of the tournament, and senior Tasha Garcia will be competing in epee. The championships will be held at the French Field House and St. John Arena in Columbus, Ohio, Mar. 24-27.

Garcia, Oliver Qualify for NCAAs at Regionals
A pair of Yale women's fencers, senior epeeist Tasha Garcia and sophomore sabreist captain Madeline Oliver, qualified for the NCAA championship at Sunday's NCAA Northeast Regional at Vassar. Oliver placed eighth in her weapon and Garcia placed ninth in hers.

Fencing to Compete in NCAA Regionals
Having finished up its regular season with the United States Collegiate Championships, the Yale women’s fencing team will now set its sights to the NCAA National Championships. The tournament is an individual competition, which names a national champion for each of the three weapons. . The journey beings on Sunday with NCAA Northeast Regional Championships, hosted by Vassar College in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. This weekend’s results, in conjunction with overall season results, will determine the qualifiers for the National Championships, which will be held at Ohio State University in two weeks.

The Yale women’s fencing team is preparing to participate in the first ever US Squad Championships this Sunday, February 27. The tournament will be hosted by NYU and will feature the top 24 fencing programs in the country.

Competition Concludes at Ivy Championships
The Yale women's fencing team concluded competition at the Ivy League Championships Sunday, falling to Penn, Cornell, Princeton and Harvard. The Bulldogs had lost to Columbia and Brown on Saturday. Princeton won the championship.

Bulldogs Finish First Day of Ivy Championships
The Yale women's fencing team finished with a 0-2 record after the first day of fencing in the Ivy League Championship tournament. The Bulldogs lost to Columbia by a final score of 6-21 to start the day, then lost a close one against Brown with a final score of 12-15. Captain Madeline Oliver and Lidia Gocheva both finished the day with 4-2 records. Yale will fence Cornell, Harvard, Penn and Princeton tomorrow.

Bulldogs Defeat Vassar
The Yale women’s fencing team hosted a dual-meet against Vassar on Monday, Jan. 29, in the seventh floor fencing salon of Payne Whitney Gymnasium. The Bulldogs rose to the challenge and defeated Vassar by a final score of 16-11 in front of a group of loyal Yale fans. After Saturday’s victory over Sacred Heart, Monday’s win gives the Elis a two-win streak.

Yale Wins Convincingly Against Sacred Heart
The Yale women’s fencing team hosted Sacred Heart for a dual-meet on Saturday, Jan. 29. Before a big home crowd in the seventh floor fencing salon in the Payne Whitney Gymnasium, the Bulldogs defeated Sacred Heart by a final score of 19-8. Drew University was originally scheduled to participate in the Triangular meet, but eventually withdrew because of inclement weather.

Bulldogs Compete in NYU Invitational
The Yale women’s fencing team finished a tough day of fencing at the NYU Invitational tournament on Saturday, Jan. 22. The Bulldogs compiled an overall record of 1-4 on the day. Yale defeated WSU, but fell to Notre Dame, Northwestern, NYU and Ohio State. The loss against NYU was particularly heartbreaking for the Elis, as it came down to just one bout. At last year’s tournament, Yale posted a 2-3 record, with the only difference being a victory against NYU.

The Yale women’s fencing team will head to New York City on Saturday, to take part in the annual New York University Invitational tournament. Yale will have a long day of fencing, competing in dual-meets against Notre Dame, Northwestern, NYU, Ohio State, and Wayne State.

Women’s Fencing Goes 3-2 at Brandeis
The Yale women’s fencing team participated in the Brandeis Invitational tournament on Sunday, Nov. 5. During a long day of fencing, the Bulldogs defeated Boston College, Brandeis and Haverford, while losing to MIT and St. Johns, en route to a 3-2 record.

Bulldogs Finish Fencing at Penn State Open
On Saturday and Sunday, the Yale women’s fencing team took part in the Penn State Open, in State College, Pa. The two-day individual tournament was the Bulldogs’ first live competition of the season, and gave them a chance to assess their standing at this point in the year. Captain Madeline Oliver finished in the Top 16 in saber and sophomore Robyn Shaffer finished in the Top 24 in epee.

Yale Fencing Hosts 40th Anniversary Celebration of Head Coach Henry Harutunian
Friends, alumni and the Yale fencing team celebrated the 40th anniversary of head coach Henry Harutunian on October 9, 2010 at the William K. Lanman Center inside Payne Whitney Gym. Coach Harutunian was honored for his 40 years of service and dedication to Yale fencing. The night began with a reception in the Kiphuth Trophy Room followed by dinner and an evening of celebration in the Lanman Center.
