Tough Day at Brandeis Invitational

Bulldogs Finish With 2-3 Record

WALTHAM, Mass. – It was a difficult day for the Yale women's fencing team at the Dec. 4 Brandeis Invitational, hosted by Brandeis University at Waltham, Mass. The team battled its way through competition, finishing up Sunday with a 2-3 record.

The Bulldogs' results at this year's Brandeis Invitational are similar to last year, when the team walked away with a 3-2 record – they beat out Boston College, Brandeis and Haverford, while falling to MIT and St. John's.

This year, the Yale team kicked off competition against UNC, falling just short 12-15. But the Bulldogs quickly turned that around with a narrow 14-13 victory over MIT.

While the team also fell to Boston College 11-16 and St. John's 24-3, the Bulldogs took some solace with their win over home team Brandeis, 16-11.

"I'm very happy with our results from today, " said junior captain Robyn Shaffer. "We were missing three starters, but still performed well against MIT and Brandeis.  Our close losses to UNC and BC were tough to bear, but the team kept fighting throughout the day."

With the completion of the Brandeis Invitational, the Bulldogs are off until the New York University Invitational on Jan. 21.

"We're looking forward to the continuation of our season in January, to take this spirit and excitement into our next tournaments," Shaffer said.
