Qualifies in Eighth Place
CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. – With eight members of the Yale women's fencing team competing at the Mar. 11 NCAA Regional Championship at Boston College in Chestnut Hill, Mass., freshman Lauren Miller put in a stellar effort to advance to the Mar. 22-25 NCAA National Championship.
Miller finished in ninth place individually in foil competition. That result, combined with her overall season performance, qualified her for the National Championship in eighth place among the Northeast Region fencers.
"We're all proud of Lauren Miller, coming back from an injury about two weeks ago to perform wonderfully in her first NCAA tournament, qualifying for nationals," said junior captain Robyn Shaffer.
Several other Yale fencers performed well at the Regional competition. In saber competition, junior Madeline Oliver finished in 17th place in the Regional bouts, a performance that, when combined with her season performance, narrowly put her out of qualification for the National Championship.
The Bulldogs' results throughout the course of the season were important factors in Sunday's qualification. The results of the dual-meet regular season combine with the results of Sunday's competition to determine who advances to the National Championship.
