Strong Performance by Yale Fencers in Queens
QUEENS, N.Y. — Having qualified the maximum 10 fencers for the Mar. 10 NCAA Northeast Regional here in Queens, N.Y., the Yale women's fencing took advantage of the opportunity and posted a number of strong performances.
Sunday's competition was a qualifying event for the Mar. 21-24 NCAA National Championship, held this year in San Antonio, Texas.
Senior Madeline Oliver led the way, finishing seventh in saber competition here at St. John's Carnesecca Arena and Taffner Field House. She brought her experience to bear Sunday, notching up several strong bout performances on her way to seventh place. Alongside her season performance, that result put her through to the NCAA National Championship as the seventh qualifier.
Also demonstrating her experience was sophomore Lauren Miller, who last year finished in seventh place at the NCAA National Championship. This year she came in ninth in foil competition; combined with her season performance, that result was enough to give her the seventh qualifying spot for the NCAA National Championship.
At the other end of the spectrum of experience, freshman Katherine Miller, competing in her first NCAA Regional event, finished in eighth place in epee competition.
The NCAA will formally announce the qualifiers for the NCAA National Championship on Tuesday.
