Seven Team Competition in New York
NEW HAVEN, Conn.—On the heels of a thrilling victory against Sacred Heart this past weekend, the Yale women's fencing team will compete at the Jan. 25 NYU Invitational, held at the Coles Sports Center in New York.
This year's NYU Invitational will pit the Bulldogs against six other teams in a daylong round-robin: Columbia, Notre Dame, NYU, Ohio State, St. John's and Wayne State. Yale will be looking to improve upon its record at last year's NYU Invitational, where it posted a 1-4 record with a 20-7 win against Wayne State.
Last year's record testified to the tough challenge of the NYU Invitational, where the Bulldogs face several higher ranked teams. Yale has registered a 1-4 record in the past three years of the tournament.
Still, this year Yale will enter the tournament with momentum from a victory against Sacred Heart at home this past weekend. With the score tied at 13-13, junior captain Lauren Miller won a 5-4 overtime bout to capture a 14-13 victory for the Bulldogs. That result reversed last year's heartbreaking 14-13 loss to Sacred Heart and will galvanize the team as it competes at NYU.
"This was an exciting meet to start off the bulk of our season, and I know we are all looking forward to the next three weekends of competition ahead," Miller said after the win against Sacred Heart.
