Yale Hosts Drew and Vassar
Looks to Repeat Last Year's Victories
NEW HAVEN, Conn.—Returning home after a weekend on the road, the Yale women's fencing team will host Drew and Vassar for matches on Feb. 1 in Payne Whitney Gymnasium in New Haven, Conn.
The Bulldogs will look to repeat last year's wins against the two teams. Yale beat out both Drew (24-3) and Vassar (19-8) at a meet hosted by Vassar in Poughkeepsie, N.Y.
What was particularly notable at last year's Vassar meet was the fact that every Yale fencer, including every substitute and non-starter, contributed at least one win towards the overall bout score.
Last weekend, the team faced a string of tough teams at the NYU Invitational and gained valuable match experience that will stand it in good stead as the season progresses. At NYU, the Bulldogs posted a 2-3 record that included victories against NYU (14-13) and Wayne State (20-7). That tournament followed a nail-biting 14-13 win by the Bulldogs against Sacred Heart at home.
This weekend's competition will be the last chance for Yale's fencers to tune up before the Ivy League Championship, which takes place on Feb. 8-9 at Brown in Providence, R.I.
The fencers will take on Vassar starting at 12:00 p.m. and Drew at 1:30 p.m. in the seventh floor fencing salon of Payne Whitney Gymnasium.
