Three Top-10 Finishes
WELLESLEY, Mass.—Junior captain Lauren Miller led the way for the eight members of the Yale women's fencing competing at the Mar. 9 NCAA Northeast Regional, finishing in sixth place in foil competition.
Miller was one of three Bulldogs to record a top-10 finish at the regional tournament, hosted this year by Wellesley in Wellesley, Mass. In their first NCAA regional appearance, freshmen Joanna Lew and Lillie Lainoff finished in ninth and tenth place in saber competition, respectively. Sophomore Katherine Miller, who earned second team All-Ivy recognition earlier in the season, was Yale's top finisher in epee competition, closing the day in 11th place.
This is not the first year that Lauren Miller and Katherine Miller have performed well in NCAA competition. Last year Lauren Miller finished in ninth place at the NCAA Northeast Regional and 13th place at the NCAA National Championship, while Katherine Miller captured eighth place at the NCAA Northeast Regional.
This year's eight Yale fencers advanced to Sunday's regional tournament on the basis of their performance throughout the course of the regular season, as well as during the Feb. 8-9 Ivy League Championship, held this year at Brown in Providence, R.I. The three top-10 finishes matches the Bulldogs' record at last year's NCAA Northeast Regional.
The results of the NCAA Northeast Regional will help determine which fencers advance to the NCAA National Championship, held this year in Columbus, Ohio. The formal announcement of the NCAA National Championship qualifiers will be made Tuesday.
