Nine Bulldogs to Fence at NCAA Regionals

Nine Bulldogs to Fence at NCAA Regionals

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - This Sunday, the Yale women's fencing team will send nine fencers to compete at the NCAA Northeast Regionals, held in Waltham, Mass at Brandeis University.

All of the team's fencers are ranked in the top-sixteen of their respective events. Sophomore epeeist Michelle Nam boasts the highest seeding, ranked third going into the tournament. Junior Lucy Friedmann will also be competing in the women's epee event.

The foil squad will be sending the most competitors: two juniors, Sarah Pak and Jenny Zhao, sophomore Anna Zhou and first-year Camille Pham.

Team captain and senior Ilana Kamber will serve as the only veteran Yale fencer in the women's saber event. She will compete alongside first-years Mary Barnett and Lauren Kim.

Coming off of their strongest season in recent memory, the team hopes to increase the number of fencers that it qualifies for NCAA Championships. Last year, a record-breaking five members qualified and competed in these championships: now-junior foil fencer Sarah Pak, current sophomore foilist Anna Zhou, then-team captain Katherine Miller, and 2017 seniors Joanna Lew and Lillie Lainoff.

The tournament will start at approximately 9:00 a.m. on Sunday with the women's epee and saber events. Women's foil will begin at 10:00 a.m.
