Bulldogs Dominate Competition at Home

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The women's fencing team competed against Vassar and Sacred Heart Universities in the team's first home meet of the season.

At noon, the Bulldogs faced off against Vassar. All three squads won 8-1, a resounding victory for the team. Shirley Wang went undefeated in all three bouts, and Michelle Nam won both her bouts before substituting out to allow alternate India Bhalla-Ladd a bout, which she won 5-4. The squad had an incredible eight-win streak before losing the final bout 5-4. In saber, starters Samantha Wood, Yoanna Lazarova, and anchor Lauren Kim had an equally impressive day; Lazarova and Kim went undefeated, and Wood lost in a close 5-4 bout. In foil, senior Sarah Pak went undefeated in all three bouts, and starters Pak, Camille Pham, and Anna Zhou started their day with a five-win streak. The final score came out to a decisive 23-4 victory for Yale.

Against Sacred Heart, a highlight of the competition was a straight 9-0 win for foil squad. Starters Pak, Pham, and Zhou were barrelling through the lineup with an impressive 7-0 streak before Zhou substituted out to allow alternate Grace Baghdadi a bout. Baghdadi continued the streak with a 5-4 win, and Pak rounded out the day with a resounding 5-0 finish. The epee squad pulled through with a 5-4 victory thanks to the collective efforts of starters Friedmann, Wang, Joy Ma, and Nam. Wang would again went undefeated. Saber likewise finished with an overall score of 5-4. Starters Wood and Kim each won a bout against an incomplete SHU lineup, taking the remaining wins through forfeit. The final score stood at a 19-8 victory for Yale.


Notably, Zhou, Wang, Pak went undefeated against both schools. Zhou maintained her all-win streak against Sacred Heart from this year. Pak maintained her undefeated streak from last year, defeating all of her opponents from Vassar and Sacred Heart both times. Pak and Friedmann were recognized in the annual Senior Day Ceremony for their accomplishments throughout their four years on the team and their professional success upon graduating Yale.


All in all, the day was a triumph on many fronts.
