NEW YORK, N.Y. - Yale beat Wayne St. at the NYU Invitational Saturday in New York, N.Y. The 20-7 win was the lone bright spot of the day, however, as the Bulldogs also lost matches to Notre Dame (19-8), Northwestern (20-7), NYU (16-11) and Ohio St. (25-2). The Bulldogs' 2007-08 dual meet record now stands at 5-7, as they prepare to enter Ivy League competition beginning Sunday, Feb. 3.
The foil squad posted a 9-0 win to pace Yale's defeat of Wayne St. Sophomores Jennifer Ivers and Lidia Gocheva and junior Jennifer Cohen all notched perfect 3-0 records. The epee squad posted a 6-3 victory, with freshman Pruittiporn Kerdchoochuen, sophomore Rebecca Moss and junior Abigail Fraeman all winning two bouts. The sabre squad fenced to a 5-4 win. Senior captain Erin Frey won the deciding bout with the match score tied at 4-4.
Yale fell to Notre Dame, 19-8. The Fighting Irish swept the weapons, taking the sabre, 7-2, and the foil and epee by matching 6-3 tallies.
The Bulldogs had similar luck against Northwestern and lost, 20-7. The Wildcats' foilists won a convincing 8-1 victory, while the sabre and epee squads claimed 6-3 wins.
Yale's saberists won seven of nine bouts against host NYU, but a 6-3 loss in the foil and an 8-1 loss in the epee tilted the match in NYU's favor.
Ohio St. beat Yale, 25-2, in the final match of the day.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Sunday, Feb. 3, when the Ivy League will travel to New Haven, Conn., and Yale's Payne Whitney Gymnasium for the Ivy North Competition.
