Sabre Squad Leads Yale Past Rutgers

Jan. 27, 2007

NEW HAVEN, Conn. - The sabre squad won seven of nine bouts to lead Yale past Rutgers, 16-11, on Saturday at Payne Whitney Gymnasium. Senior saberist Genevieve Tauxe set the pace by posting a perfect 3-0 record. Rutgers did find success with the epee, however, notching a 9-0 mark.

Freshman Katherine Arden and junior Erin Frey both won two bouts to add to Tauxe's three victories, as the sabre squad rolled to a 7-2 record.

Since Rutgers could not field a full foil squad, they were forced to forfeit six bouts. Freshman Lidia Gocheva, junior Diana Schawlowski and senior Alisa Mendelsohn all won their only bout to give the squad a 9-0 record on the day.

The Rutgers epee squad was extremely strong, however, and won all nine bouts contested. Freshman Rebecca Moss and seniors Anne Nguyen and Tejas Srinivas represented Yale with the epee.

The win brings the Bulldogs' overall record to 5-1.

Yale travels to New York for the NYU Invitational on Sunday, January 28th.
