Bulldogs Sweep Two Weapons, Crush Sacred Heart 21-6

Jan. 28, 2006

The Sacred Heart Pioneers were sent packing on Saturday after a 21-6 drubbing at the hands of the Yale fencing team. Six Bulldogs had perfect 3-0 days and Yale shutout Sacred Heart in two weapons to repel their trespass into the Payne Whitney Gym.

The consistently strong Yale foil squad turned in another banner performance. Alisa Mendelsohn, Diana Schawlowski, and Jennifer Cohen were all undefeated, adding up to a 9-0 victory. Schawlowski was particularly impressive, coming away untouched and with no points against her on the afternoon.

The Elis also had little trouble with the opposing squad in the epee, winning 9-0. Tejas Srinivas, Isadora Botwinick, and Anne Nguyen were 3-0.

The only stain on the afternoon came in the sabre, where the Bulldogs lost 6-3. Erin Frey was 2-1, but Carly Guss and Genevieve Tauxe combined for just one additional win.

Yale will try to use this confidence-building victory as a springboard into the tough Ivy competition awaiting them in the coming weeks.
