NEW HAVEN, Conn. -
Yale won dual meets against Wayne State (17-10) and host NYU (20-7) Sunday at the NYU Invitational. The Bulldogs have now beaten the Violets three times in as many chances, the last coming in a November match-up in New Haven. Overall, the team fenced to a 2-3 record, losing meets to top teams, Northwestern (21-6), Ohio State (19-8) and Notre Dame (19-8).
The foil squad led the Bulldogs' win over Wayne St., as freshman Lidia Gocheva, junior Diana Schawlowski and senior Alisa Mendelsohn all posted a 3-0 record. Freshman Katherine Arden and junior Erin Frey both notched two victories to pace the sabre squad's 5-4 win.
Yale swept the weapons against NYU, again going a perfect 9-0 with the foil. Freshman Rebecca Moss won three bouts as the epee squad won 5-4. Meanwhile, in the sabre, Frey went 3-0, while Arden and senior Genevieve Tauxe took two of three.
But the Bulldogs struggled with some of the top competition in the country: They lost all three weapons to both Northwestern and Notre Dame. The foil squad did take seven of nine bouts, however, against Ohio State. Freshman Farrah Kimovec provided a bright spot, managing two victories in the sabre against Northwestern.
Yale plays host to Sacred Heart on Wednesday, January 31st, at Payne Whitney Gymnasium.
