PRINCETON, N.J. - Yale lost twice on Sunday, as the Ivy League Fencing Championships concluded in Princeton, N.J. The Bulldogs were bettered by the host Princeton Tigers and perennial powerhouse Columbia. The losses bring the team's record to 5-13 on the year.
The Bulldogs battled the Tigers closely but ended up on the losing end of the 15-12 final. The Yale sabre squad took home a 5-4 win; sophore Katherine Arden and senior captain Erin Frey both tallied 2-1 records. The epee squad fought to a close 5-4 loss. Junior Abigail Fraeman posted a 2-1 mark. Finally, in the sabre, despite Lidia Gocheva's three wins, the Yale squad lost, 6-3.
It was all Lions in the Bulldog's second match. Columbia claimed 26 of 27 bouts, with the sophomore saberist, Gocheva, winning Yale's only bout.
Yale finished last in the Ivy League with an 0-6 record. Columbia (6-0) won the Ivy title.
The Bulldogs will return to action on Feb. 24, when they begin their postseason schedule in New York, N.Y. at the IFA Championships.
