WALTHAM, Mass. - Yale claimed two victories at the Brandeis Invitational, Saturday. The event, hosted in Waltham, Mass., marks the start of the dual meet season. The Bulldogs' two victories came against Boston College and Tufts. The team lost, however, to host Brandeis, MIT and St. John's.
It was the saberists who led the Bulldogs' winning efforts against Boston College and Tufts. Yale edged Boston College, 14-13. The sabre squad went 7-2, while the epeeists, led by returning sophomore stand-out Rebecca Moss, recorded six victories.
Against Tufts, the saberists managed a perfect 9-0 mark. The epee and foil squads both battled to 5-4 records, in Yale's 19-8 win over the Jumbos. Senior captain Erin Frey and sophomores Katherine Arden and Farrah Kimovec lead the sabre squad.
The Bulldogs lost to host Brandeis, 16-11. The sabre squad managed to beat Brandeis', 6-3, but Yale's foil squad fell, 8-1, and the epee squad lost five of nine.
MIT also proved too much for the Blue, as they won, 18-9. Each of Yale's three squads fell by matching 6-3 tallies.
The Bulldogs put up a tough fight against St. John's but ended up three bouts short, as they lost to the Red Storm, 15-12. The squads again posted identical records; unfortunately, they all lost five of nine bouts.
In the end, the sabre squad ended up with the Bulldogs' best record: they won 29 of 45 bouts. The epeeists were 22-23 on the day, and the foil squad notched 14 bout victories.
Yale will host Sacred Heart on Dec. 8, in its first home dual meet of the season.
