Rising Junior Vying for Spot on Roster in Upcoming International Competitions

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Rising junior midfielder/back Georgia Holland (Stony Brook, N.Y.) has been selected to USA Field Hockey's Under-21 squad, and is now vying for a chance to represent her country in upcoming international competitions with the U.S. U21 team. Holland was one of 30 players selected to the U21 squad, and USA Field Hockey will draw from that list of players to determine the final roster for tournaments such as the Junior Pan American Championship Sept. 10-23 in Guadalajara, Mexico. Holland has already been selected for the U.S. team's Junior Pan American Training Camp in College Park, Md., Aug. 16-22.

Holland's most recent USA Field Hockey experience came at the Women's National Championship in College Park, Md., last month. There she was part of the North team roster in the eight-team tournament featuring the best field hockey players in the country. Following that tournament, USA Field Hockey selected the roster for the National Team that will compete in the upcoming Olympics.

Selections for the U.S. U21 squad (and the U19 squad) were made following the completion of Junior National Camp earlier this month at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst. The four-day training camp included 100 athletes.

Holland was named Yale's Player of the Year this past season and was a unanimous first team All-Ivy League selection. She continued to be an offensive threat while also handling plenty of defensive responsibility, as indicated by her team-high three defensive saves. She tied for second on the team in goals and points (9-4-22), including a hat trick in the win vs. Dartmouth Oct. 15. Holland scored the game-winning goal in the 7-0 win over Brown in the regular season finale Nov. 5 that clinched a share of the Ivy League championship for Yale.

Holland took part in USA Field Hockey's Senior National Championship last year. Her USA Field Hockey experience also includes traveling with the Under-19 Junior Women's National Team to Santiago, Chile, to play the Chilean Junior National Team as well as top local clubs. She won USA Field Hockey's Junior National Championship with the Pennsylvania team in June of 2010. She was also part of Olympic Development Select and was on the U19 team for the Argentina Tour in April 2010. She attended Junior National Camp from 2008-2010, was part of Futures Elite in 2009, and attended the National Futures Championship in 2008 and 2009. She played with Yale rising junior goalkeeper Emily Cain (Laytonsville, Md.) on the Junior Olympic Team in 2008, earning second place.

Holland, who was Ivy League co-Rookie of the Year and a second team All-Ivy League selection in 2010, was an All-American at Ward Melville prior to coming to Yale. She is in Ezra Stiles College.

In addition to Holland, the U.S. U21 squad includes players such as National Team members Michelle Cesan, Kelsey Kolojejchick, Julia Reinprecht and Emily Wold.

The Junior Pan American Championship features teams from 13 countries divided up into three pools. The U.S. opens competition vs. Brazil Sept. 10 and also plays Barbados and Mexico before the "cross-over" games between teams in different pools take place. Classification matches start on Sept. 22 and culminate with the championship Sept. 23.
