NEW HAVEN, Conn. – The Yale field hockey team fell behind twice Saturday afternoon at Johnson Field, and the second deficit ultimately proved too much to overcome as the Bulldogs fell 3-2 to Lafayette. It was Yale's first loss of the season.

Lafayette (3-1, 0-0 Patriot League) took a 1-0 lead on a goal by midfielder Rosa Jonckheer at 17:11 of the first. By that point Yale had denied three Leopard penalty corners, and within 10 minutes the Bulldog penalty corner unit delivered the equalizer. Senior midfielder/back Steffi Katz inserted to junior back Kiwi Comizio, who set up junior forward/midfielder Carol Middough for a shot that went over Lafayette keeper Katelyn Arnold. That tied the game 1-1 at 27:11.

The Bulldogs drew two more corners in the first but could not convert. Lafayette then went back ahead early in the second on a goal by forward Rosie Shanks at 38:40. The Leopards extended the lead to 3-1 on a tally by midfielder Aliza Furneaux at 52:37.

Once again, Yale fought back 10 minutes later thanks to a penalty corner. After Comizio took the insertion far outside the circle, she got it back to Middough for a shot towards the goal that sophomore forward Allie Carrigan deflected in. That was Yale's first second-half goal of the season, and it pulled the Bulldogs within 3-2 with 7:44 to play. Comizio has already set a career high in assists, as she now has three for the year.

Yale (2-1, 0-0 Ivy League) was unable to complete the comeback, however. The Bulldogs' last good chance was a tip by freshman forward/midfielder Camille Scheyer that went wide with 45 seconds to play. Lafayette worked the final seconds off the clock with a long pass out of its own end just before time expired.

Senior goalkeeper Emilie Katz finished with five saves, while Arnold made three.

Yale returns to action Sunday, hosting Hofstra at 2:00 p.m.
